This review is just on the private rooms available in hostel. Although I did see into some of the dorm rooms, those dorm rooms would be an excellent place to stay. Anyhow, this unassuming hostel from the outside does not look like much but boy; this hostel is a top three hostel in the world for me. The "global" part of the Global Village Travellers Hostel is themed globally, but mostly an exotic African theme, which I like. The price for the private room was very reasonable. A small balcony with a chair was outside, but it was too cold to enjoy. Oh yeah, they have a small hot tub and sauna, which is very nice after a long journey on the rugged Western Coast of the South Island. The hostel is very clean, with a nice kitchen and many social areas. Parking is sufficient for the hostel. They offer a lot of services and activities from the hostel. You are a short walk from a nearby supermarket and some restaurants This is pretty close to the ideal hostel.

It's the best looking hostel I've ever stayed in. The whole area is decorated with native African art, pictures and posters. Jazz music is playing in the lounge. It looks more like a museum than a hostel. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, ready to answer any question you have, whether it's the best restaurants' locations or places to visit and things to do in Greymouth. They can even organise picking up/dropping off from the train station if you don't want to walk. What impressed me the most is the amount of notes everywhere: in the kitchen, lounge, rooms. Where to put a plastic bottle, where are the plates and mugs, how to use a washing machine, etc. You simply can't have any questions, given that you CAN read. It's brilliant for people who like keeping things in order and being tidy! Above all of that there are free bicycles in the shed for you to explore the town. They might be not in the best condition, but they're FREE!

I absolutely loved staying here. A highlight was waking up after a restful night’s sleep, going out to the exceptionally well kitted-out kitchen, making a coffee and then gazing out the back window, watching birds flying around the garden. It was so peaceful. So lovely. This is not a party hostel (praise be) and everyone I met was warm, friendly and appreciative of a good night sleep and cheerful conversation. Fantastic! The ammenities are excellent and real value for money. And the doors do not bang; they glide shut. That matters because there’s no irritating background clanging and banging. So appreciative of that. Highly recommend staying here. PS Don’t let the 1km distance from town put you off; the owner runs a shuttle. Truly, they must have been avid backpackers themselves because this place has everything a hostel-goer could ever want.

It's a truly unique and beautiful hostel where you easily fall into deeper relaxation. To start off with, the whole place is a piece of art! Every detail is made and cared for with a strong sense of quality and thoughtfulness. The kitchen is an inspiring place to cook, the fridges are clean, the knives are sharp and the pans are in perfect condition. There's fresh air flowing through the hostel during the day and warm air from the heating during the night. I feel like there's no end to all the good things I could say about the Global village. I guess I'm just very happy there's still gems like this around, where it's not just about the money, but about creating a beautiful place for travelers to rest, play boardgames, music and forget about the time for a while...

GVT is a wonderful place. Great location with a kind and helpful staff. The owner takes grrat pride in this Backpacker Gem. Kitchen is immaculate, two rooms i have stayed in #3 and #7 were clean, well organized, comfortable and clean linens. If given a choice opt for Room 7, a bit bigger and comes with private balcony. The kitchen and eating area are well equipped and clean. There is a porch off of the eating area that is a relaxing place to eat, talk with friends/new aquaiteneces or contemplate the joys of traveling in New Zealand. The owner has a most amazing collection of African Art and Austrailian Aboriginal Paintings that decorate the Backpacker/Hostel. Free use of bikes and kayaks, along with amlle free parking are additional pluses.
